CETÁCEOS URUGUAY
INVESTIGATION AND CONSERVATION OF CETACEANS IN URUGUAY
 
 


The main objective of the research group Cetáceos Uruguay is to promote investigation and conservation of cetaceans in the Uruguayan coast. Cetáceos Uruguay originated in 2004, when students of the Bachelor in Biological Sciences Degree doing research at the Ethology, Evolution, Ecology and Oceanography laboratories at the Faculty of Sciences (University of the Republic, UDELAR), joined their projects in order to maximise their efforts and their future objectives.
At present, Cetáceos Uruguay constitutes a research branch associated to the Ethology Section of the Faculty of Sciences and it is integrated by researchers with PhD, Master and Bachelor of Sciences degrees. Some members of our research team are conducting their postgraduate studies at the Faculty of Sciences, University of the Republic, UDELAR (Uruguay); Autonomous University of Baja California (Mexico); and Girona University , Spain.

Cetáceos Uruguay conduct its activities through specific research projects and conservation of marine mammals (the project have the academic and institutional support of the Faculty of Sciences (UDELAR). Several projects work in collaboration with BSc. student and biologist of the Faculty of Sciences. We pretend to continue and to maintain capacitating our human resources at a national and international level. In addition, Cetáceos Uruguay aims to establish the first marine mammal research laboratory in Uruguay.

Cetáceos Uruguay counts with the advising of national and regional research expertises, such as: Ing. Agr. Ricardo Praderi and Dr. Bettina Tassino from Uruguay; Dr. Enrique Crespo from Argentine and Dr. Eduardo Secchi from Brazil. Cetáceos Uruguay coordinates its research projects with public institutions and NGO’s such as: the National Administration of Aquatic Resources (DINARA); the National Naval Prefecture and General Command of the Army; Uruguayan Antarctic Institute (IAU); NGO Karumbé (Marine Turtles of Uruguay); NGO Averaves and the National Museum of Natural History and the Oceanographic Museum “Prof. Eliézer C. Ríos” (Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil).
