19/07/2010 - Stranding of striped dolphin in Aguas Dulces, Rocha
On July 19 2010, at Aguas Dulces beach (Uruguayan Atlantic Coast) a stranded dolphin was found by local lifeguard, Gonzalo Rodriguez. The previous day, he said, the dolphin was alive and its jaw was broken. The local inhabitants made several attempts to return the dolphin to the sea, but unfortunately they were not successful. Due to the great storms in the past two days and the logistical difficulty of traveling to the site, we arrived at 19 pm, when the dolphin was already dead. The dolphin was identified as a striped dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba), and an adult male of 2 m in length. Minutes later after we arrived, the locals appeared at the beach and were intrigued, curious and were eager to collaborate. The necropsy was carried out with the assistance of Diego, Martin, Monica, and Mariano Esteban. Biopsy samples were collected that will be used to study diet, genetic, reproduction and the morphology of the species which is rarely found in Uruguay. Striped dolphin is found in temperate and tropical waters and little is known about the species in the Southwest Atlantic Ocean. There are a few records from Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina. In Uruguay, this individual was the second record of the species and the first stranded specimen was found in Solymar Beach (Canelones).
The necropsy was conducted by MSc. Paula Laporta
